In his address, Professor Xia Jun pointed out China's growing water security challenges, driven by the mismatch between water resources and arable land, rising water demand, and climate change. He stressed the need for a systems-based approach to managing the complex relationship between people, water, and land. He also introduced the Yangtze River Simulator (YRS) as an example of technological innovation supporting river basin governance and called for greater global cooperation to advance sustainable development.
The symposium featured 15 plenary sessions, over 170 breakout presentations, and a poster exhibition, reinforcing its role as a leading international platform in Earth system science.
